The story of quilting, from ancient quilted garments to the patchwork traditions we know today.
Quilting Through the Ages: A Short History
Quilting is far older than most people imagine. Long before it became a beloved craft for bed covers and wall hangings, stitching layers of fabric together was a practical way to stay warm and protected.
From Practical Layers to Patchwork
Early quilted textiles were used for clothing and padding, including the quilted garments worn under armour in medieval Europe. Over the centuries the technique moved into the home, where quilts became bedding that could be made from whatever fabric was on hand.
In early America, thrift shaped the craft. Scraps of worn clothing were pieced into blocks, and neighbours gathered at quilting bees to finish tops together. Those gatherings turned quilting into a social tradition as much as a household skill, and many classic block patterns date from this era.
